Norman 'Headphones Norm' Barker
On the weekend Charlton Athletic celebrated 33 years back at The Valley following multiple years in exile, a moment in history that saw a dark cloud lifted over SE7, it is with a heavy heart that these celebrations were cut short on this day and the dark cloud emerged once again as the Charlton family loses one of its most loyal and cherished fans, Norman Barker - known fondly as "Headphones Norm".
On Saturday 6th December, in a fixture that is synonymous with the return to The Valley - Charlton Athletic vs. Portsmouth - the game was stopped in the 12th minute following attempts from The Valley faithful in the North Stand Lower to attract the attention of stewards and paramedics to a serious medical emergency. Upon this news reaching referee, Matt Donohue, the sensible decision was made to stop the game and remove the players from the pitch and then ultimately abandon the match entirely.
In spite of the immense and courageous efforts of all involved, Norman later passed away in hospital.
The mist that rolls in from the Thames this evening will feel more like tears than rain. Norman was a beloved part of the Charlton family. Even those that didn't know him personally knew of him for his constant presence home and away at Charlton games over many years, headphones in tow at all times, of course.
It's moments like this that reminds us all that football is more than just a game, its a human experience. Norm was the embodiment of the dedication and passion it takes to be a true Charlton Athletic follower and fan. Few fans followed through thick and thin like Norm. Perhaps rivaled only by the late and great Seb Lewis, of whom we must continue to remember.
I can't speak personally to the man that was Norman Barker, I can just say that when I saw him 'dahn The Valley', he always had a smile on his face, and though we lost him today, I hope all those that love and adore him find some comfort in the knowledge that he left us doing what he loved alongside his Charlton family.
We are all fans but we aren't all 'Headphones Norm', he was something more.
Rest In Peace, Norm.

This is a lovely piece. Norman will be very much missed 🎧❤️
ReplyDeleteWhat a perfect tribute. I saw Norm around the North strand before I met him... as you say an embodiment of Charlton. 🎧🤎
